Meet Alyssa
Hi! I’m a therapist and performer in NYC and I specialize in the unique needs of creative students and professionals. I provide individual therapy for creatives as well as working collaboratively with training programs and theatre companies to build communities that prioritize the wellbeing of artists. My goal in all the work I do is to foster the flexibility, wellbeing, and resilience that artists need to thrive.
After graduating from North Central College with a B.A. in Theatre Performance, I spent the next several years working as a musical theatre performer. I decided to pivot to theatre education in 2017, earning my master’s degree in Educational Theatre from New York University. During that time, I noticed a theme among the actors and educators I was working with: when folks were struggling in their careers or decided to leave the industry entirely, it wasn’t due to lack of talent or drive – it was due to burnout. We had all spent our time in training programs being taught how to perform and how to market ourselves, but none of us had been taught how to care for our mental health in this strenuous, taxing career. I began doing research on mental health for actors, and developed a semester-long mental health curriculum for actor training programs.
After teaching music and drama at an inclusion school for a few years, I decided to take my passion for mental health and make it into a profession. I received my master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The Chicago School, and throughout that time I continued to run workshops for creatives. After my year-long internship, I began working full-time at a private practice in NYC, where I had the privilege of working full-time with creatives and other adults seeking support, resilience, and positive change. I’ll be joining Insight Therapy NYC in October 2025, where I look forward to continuing that work. I still perform from time to time around NYC, which allows me to stay connected to the theatre community.
I have seen firsthand the unique joys and heartbreaking challenges of a career in performing. I have seen how much vulnerability is required, often with very little care for the wellbeing of the performer. Performers are asked over and over again to bare their souls, shoulder constant rejection and criticism, and live on salaries that barely cover rent. My goal is to help performers build the resilience they need to have sustainable careers, while helping to rebuild training programs and the industry as a whole in a way that fosters wellbeing rather than sacrificing it.
My approach is trauma-informed, values-driven, and deeply collaborative. I draw on clinical expertise and lived experience to create spaces where people can show up as their full selves, whether that’s in therapy, rehearsal, or the classroom.
